I’ve always been interested in pattern and texture since I can first remember painting. Repetition of motifs and contrasts of light and dark, matt and dull metallic, shadows and stark lines have been my hallmark for some time.
Printing, in all its low tech applications, remains for me the most effective way to achieve the variety and richness of surface decoration that I look for. There’s something immensely satisfying in achieving an almost random beauty from simple techniques and going on to create something far more complex and engaging from the juxtaposition of diverse pieces of fabric.
The use of fabric and paint is a constant in my work. I never tire of the sheer physicality of fabric in all its many forms and enjoy the variety of texture, weight and warmth of its woven structure.
